Politics of Religious Freedom: Contested Norms and Local Practices
Hosted by the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation – Venice School of Human Rights
We will hold our first workshop in Europe, which remains one of the most influential centers for thinking about different models of religious pluralism and religious liberty. Given its variegated history of church-state relations, legal traditions, and layered jurisdictions, Europe is a crucial site for re-thinking the history and politics of the right to religious freedom. This first workshop will explore contemporary legal and political debates, conflicts, and ongoing practical projects concerning religious freedom in Europe.

Politics of Religious Freedom: Contested Norms and Local Practices
In the workshop in Chiangmai, we will focus on the legal and political struggles around the concept and practice of the right to religious freedom in post-colonial societies of the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia. Part of the aim of our project is to track the contested and multivalent meanings and histories of the right to religious liberty in non-western societies, with special attention to how the development of this concept in Europe, the United States, and international law continues to shape debates in non-western parts of the world.
